- This is the user manual for ALevel. It is based on the Helpreader system
- which makes it much easier to use than an ordinary text file. Throughout the
- text you will find buttons like this @%file#. Clicking with SELECT on these
- buttons takes you directly to related parts of the manual. To return to your
- original place double-click anywhere in the text with ADJUST. HelpReader
- remembers the last 8 positions. Clicking MENU in this window allows you
- to choose the topic which interests you and go straight to it.

- @#purpose
-
- ALevel
-
- ALevel is intended to analyse a set of A-level results and produce
- statistics on pass-rates etc, both for the results as a whole and for
- individual subjects. Printed output of the program's analysis can be
- obtained.
-
- @#use
- Using the program
-
- Before ALevel can be used the exam results must have been entered into the
- relevant Powerbase database. This will probably be called either '!Year2' or
- something like '!Left1992'. Entering this data is a perfectly normal editing
- operation. If unfamiliar with Powerbase editing please read the Help file
- for Powerbase itself.
-
- (a) Ensure that Powerbase itself is running with the required year as the
- current database.
-
- (b) Double click on the ALevel icon and wait for it to appear on the
- iconbar. The application's window will then be displayed.
-
- (c) Make sure that the ALevel window shows the correct database name, i.e.
- the same one which is running under Powerbase. Enter the SEARCH FORMULA
- which specifies the records to be analysed by ALevel. If you are a
- regular Powerbase user you will know all about search formulae; if not
- it's 'RTFM' once again! To make things a little easier, though, the
- most likely requirement is to analyse ALL students on the A-level
- course, i.e. everyone with an 'A' in the 'COURSE' field. This can be
- done with the formula CRSE=A which is therefore offered as a default.
-
- (d) Click with SELECT on the GO button. The number of candidates processed
- is continuously displayed as the analysis proceeds. When the process is
- complete the results may be examined as described below.
-
- @#print
- Printing the Results
-
- Click MENU over the ALevel window. Choosing 'General data' will print
- details of the numbers of candidates and entries, the overall pass rate and
- the pass rates for candidates taking different numbers of subjects. This
- information appears in a screen window from which it can either be saved as
- a file or printed directly. The 'Save' box appears at the same time as the
- list (If you lose the 'Save' box, clicking MENU over the list will make it
- reappear) and the file icon may be dragged to a directory viewer or to the
- printer icon if the latter is present on the icon bar. If you just click on
- the OK button the text file will be saved in the PrintJobs directory inside
- the database directory.
-
- The second menu choice, 'Subject data' produces an analysis broken down by
- subject. This list may be saved and printed in the same way described above.
